The tweet did not go viral, because it contains a very niche hip-hop reference (to Smoothe da Hustler and Trigger the Gambler\u2019s 1995 NYC underground rap classic \u201CBroken Language\u201D), stilted syntax, and a Mach 4+ insight that the masses are clearly not ready for \u2014 a burning truth that we have to enshrine here in the newsletter with an official BBSP Decree:

(A) An example of the probability-tracking task sequence (Behrens et al., 2007). In this instance, the player chose the green option (indicated by a grey background) and win the 57 points reward allotted to that option as signalled by the presentation of the correct option in the middle of the display; (B) Mean and S.E. of Bs for all regressors from the single participant GLMs of 87 regular (but non-pathological) participating gamblers. Regressors include: (i) a constant term (ii) tracked probability for the green option on the current choice; (iii) reward magnitude for the green option on the current choice; (iv-v) wins and the magnitude of the wins on the preceding choice (i.e., 'win-stay' or 'win-big-stay' strategies); and (vi-vii) loss and the magnitude of the losses on the preceding choice (i.e. 'lose-shift' or 'lose-big-shift' strategies).

(A) Individual Bs indicating the use of the optimal (Bayesian) probability estimate in making choices as a function of non-planning impulsivity score from the Barratt's Impulsivity Scale (BIS-11) (Patton et al., 1995); (B) Individual Bs indicating the use of the optimal (Bayesian) probability estimate in making choices as a function of predictive control cognitions on the Gambling-related cognitions scale (GRCS) (Raylu & Oei, 2004) alongside items on the predictive control subscale displayed on the right of the figure.

Oddsmakers have installed the San Francisco 49ers as the biggest Super Bowl favorites in history (about 19 points better than the San Diego Chargers), and there is little to dissuade serious or casual gamblers from placing a bet, legally or illegally.

Sports gambling in the US is considered a billion-dollar growth industry, and experts say the Super Bowl is the single most bet-upon event in America. Arnie Wexler, who runs a counseling service for compulsive gamblers, says, ``Bookmakers have told me that if they had 100 gamblers during a year, they had 500 or 600 for the Super Bowl.''

A recent study by the National Institute of Mental Health indicates that about 5 percent of the people who bet are compulsive gamblers or seriously at risk of becoming compulsive gamblers. Some of these individuals go over the edge at Super Bowl time and seek help.

In 1986, one gambler called a hot line and told Mr. Wexler, a recovered gambler who lectures nationwide, that he had bet $22,000 on the flip of the coin in the Super Bowl. ``Another guy called to say he had embezzled $20,000 from a bank he worked for in order to bet on the game,'' Wexler recalls. ``He was living with his parents and was afraid to go home. He wanted to kill himself.''

The Vermont Council on Problem Gambling is a non-profit corporation, founded and incorporated in 1995, with a mission to provide helpful resources for the problem gambler and his/her significant other(s) in the State of Vermont. The Council has received funding for the past five years to provide these resources and in so doing has identified a need for trained counselors to work with this population. The State of Vermont has certified and licensed over two hundred counselors to work with clients with recognized addictions, i.e. alcohol, drugs, food, and cigarettes. The issue of problem gambling has not been recognized as an addiction and training has not been provided for this disorder. The research represented in this capstone attempts to assess the resistance to acquiring training for this addiction and working with these clients. The conclusions drawn from the research are supportive in that the counselors are trying to be supportive but lack training to counsel the recognized psychiatric disorder of problem gambling. An outcome of the survey was that the Program Directors throughout the state have invited me to present the need for trained counselors and requested a Training Proposal. The Vermont Lottery has offered a sizeable amount of funds to sponsor an all-day conference on how to treat problem gambling to be held in Vermont this coming May 2003. 2ff7e9595c
